Message from our President - Irene Boey
Dear UWAS members,
Thank you for placing your faith and trust in me to be your tenth President. I would like to thank you for your support in maintaining your membership with UWAS throughout these years. I am also appealing to you to show your support through funding as well as volunteering in our many diverse projects.
Members like yourself joined UWAS because your interests are closely aligned to UWAS's main mission of utilising the expertise of graduate women to improve the lives of women and girls in the region through education and training. Many of you have already reached that stage in life that Maslow referred to as self-actualisation. You desire to take part in meaningful projects rather than social events and use your expertise for the common good.
I would like to reach out to all our UWAS members to appeal for your help as volunteers in our many community programmes. Your commitment, however small or large and in whatever capacity, can help UWAS to effectively carry out its mission of training females (and also males).
Currently, UWAS is involved in many meaningful medium to long term projects ranging from courses taught at both the male and female prisons, basic IT literacy courses for seniors and housewives, as well as courses for children and teenagers. We welcome the contribution of your efforts and expertise in teaching, writing and assisting, to enable these courses to continue to be effective or by helping to raise funds and through sponsorship or the finding of sponsors to ensure the sustainability of our projects.
I have provided a brief description of our projects here. Please read what UWAS is working on and consider how best you can be involved - we look forward to your support to continue to effectively fulfil the UWAS mission together.
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to fulfill our mission together.
About Our President Irene Boey
Irene Boey thanked members at the recent AGM for placing faith and trust in her to be their tenth President. She highlighted UWAS' commitment to improving the status of women and girls through the promotion of lifelong education. In addition, she emphasised that in line with UWAS' mission, our members should use their expertise to effect change. As such, UWAS is currently involved in events and activities that will lead to its goals and she will initiate new ground breaking activities that would help UWAS to fulfill its two-fold mission. Irene stressed the need and encourage UWAS members to participate in the various programmes that UWAS will be embarking during her 2014-2016 term.
Recently Irene was invited by APEC to speak at their Beijing WEF event and was interviewed by China Women's News on 23 May 2014. To understand her views as shared with the reporter, please click here for the article.
As Irene will be launching our new community project soon, she would like to encourage those of you who feel the same way to find out more about UWAS, its objectives and its current programmes and to seriously consider joining us as members and work towards helping more women improve their status in life through lifelong education and training.
