Demand for lithium has been rising due to the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, portable electronics and renewable energy storage systems. As a result, the lithium industry continues to seek more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to extract lithium from various sources.
01 Spodumene-lithium composition
Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral mainly composed of lithium, aluminum and silicon dioxide (LiAlSi2O6). It is one of the most abundant and economically viable lithium-containing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world's lithium reserves. Spodumene is found in pegmatite formations, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks with large interlocking crystals. The mineral's high lithium content and wide distribution make it an attractive target for lithium extraction.
02 Innovations in Lithium Extraction from Spodumene
To improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and environmental footprint of the spodumene lithium extraction process, we have introduced a number of innovations. Some of these include:
Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE): This technology aims to extract lithium directly from spodumene ore, eliminating the need for calcination and leaching steps. DLE uses advanced technologies such as selective ion exchange, nanofiltration or solvent extraction to efficiently separate lithium from ore. This approach reduces energy consumption, water usage and greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional processes.
Alternative leaching methods: Researchers are exploring alternative leaching methods to replace sulfuric acid, which is corrosive and environmentally harmful. These alternatives include hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and organic acids, which offer better selectivity and lower environmental impact.
Process Optimization: We are continuously working to optimize the entire spodumene lithium extraction process, including mining methods, ore processing technology and waste management practices. These efforts are designed to minimize energy consumption, water use and environmental impact.
