What are the uses of chromite?

1. Use of chromite in metallurgical industry

In the metallurgical industry, chromite is mainly used to produce ferrochrome and metallic chromium (also known as chromium metal).

a) Chromium ferroalloy is used as a steel additive to produce various high-strength, corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant, heat-resistant, and oxidation-resistant special steels, such as stainless steel, acid-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel, ball bearing steel, spring steel, and tool steel wait. Since about 85% of chromite is used to make stainless steel, it is called the "King of Stainless Steel"

b) Metal chromium is mainly used to smelt special alloys such as cobalt, nickel, and tungsten.

These special steels and special alloys are indispensable materials for the aviation, aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and defense industries to produce artillery, missiles, rockets and ships.

Additionally, chromite is also used in cast iron. Chromium cast iron refers to adding chromium to iron to change the physical structure and chemical properties of iron to make it more widely used. For example, chromium cast iron, ductile iron, has high strength, high elongation, high impact value and low hardness.

2. Use of chromite in chemical industry 

Various chromium salts processed from chromite ore are important raw materials for the chemical industry. Chromium salt is one of the main types of inorganic salts. It is mainly used in electroplating, tanning, printing and dyeing, medicine, fuel, catalysts, oxidants, matches and metal corrosion inhibitors.

Metallic chromium has been listed as one of the most important electroplating metals. Most often, chrome plate is used as the outermost layer of the part. The thinner the chromium layer, the closer it is to the metal surface.

Some barrels have a chromium coating on the inside that is five thousandths of a millimeter thick. Yet, after thousands of rounds were fired, it persisted. The biggest headache for soldiers on the battlefield is that gun barrels must be replaced or repaired frequently and are prone to wear and corrosion. Chrome plate perfectly solves this problem.
